("Smudge" in the photostream, but with blue eyes)

Appearance: While ThunderClan has been known to have the massive, bulky cats who can throw their weight around and expect everyone to bow to their high morals based on sheer force, Emberstar defies this idea. To say that he is like a WindClan cat would be to speak an untruth, though, as he is not skinny and tiny. Of an above average height, Emberstar lacks significant brute force-worthy muscles in his shoulders and flanks, though his legs are strong and he is nimble. His main strength physically is his ability to avoid attacks and keep stamina through logical and tactical appliances of it and the ability to store reserves of energy. He does not do this through body mass, though, but from training and general talent -- his body type is tall, but lankier than most ThunderClan toms, with a muscular appearance of slightly below-average. Elegance is where he excels, though, as his legs are long and his fur is always shining and silky, or at least he always tries to keep it that way, though he is not plump like those moss chewers over in RiverClan.
In regards to his fur-color, there are some who say it is very plain. Others might beg to differ, and still others are simply consumed in regards to his fur by the fact that it is so oddly glossy, a trait that possibly came from a parent or ancestor and was merely the way his body worked. Twolegs would call him "tuxedo", but perhaps loosely, for he is mostly black. Cats would probably refer to him as "black-and-white", though, again, there is very little white next to his black. In certain lights, his fur can shine a dark reddish brown on the edges, proof that even black cats have some true color. His nose is mostly black with a small white splash on his left side, and dribbles down his chin and then spreads to cover his chest, and becomes more of a trickling river along his underbelly. His toes all are white, and the bottom half of his hind legs are as well. His eyes, however plain his pelt may seem to some, are different, for rarely does a non-white or non-silver cat have blue eyes. His are of varying shades depending on the light and can be as deep and smooth as the midnight sky lit by Silverpelt or as cold and sharp as chips of ice. Always, though, they are enigmatic and piercing in some way.
Personality: Different cats have different descriptions of Emberstar, but all carry a few of the same themes. "Cold" is often one, a word that is sometimes replaced by "distant" or "heartless", as he would appear on the outside. Far from heartless, Emberstar merely prefers to keep his emotions hidden for the betterment of all around him. In his opinion, the world would be a much better place if cats did not act on pure emotion so often. Instead of letting other cats get close enough to render him vulnerable, Emberstar would rather keep them somewhat far from him emotionally, allowing himself to be friends and play nice where he deems it valuable to his own life and ambitions. "Cunning", "shrewd", "clever", and "like a fox straight from the Dark Forest" are also words that have been interchanged for each other when regarding Emberstar. He is, indeed, highly intelligent, especially regarding the social aspects of the Clans. Tactics, politics, and strategies are high up on his "need to know" list of priorities so that they can fit well in his manipulative schemes, many of which are made on the fly as he goes along, contrary to some other personality traits observed about him.
There is a certain cockiness to him, a pride and the deep-seeded knowledge that he is smarter than many cats. Wiles do not always win the day, especially in ThunderClan, but it is where wits will be most useful within the Clan structure itself. Emberstar thanks StarClan, a turn of phrase, of course, for being born in a Clan of brutes so he might never have to fight them. Of course, he does not harbor any true disdain for his Clanmates or his Clan, and he actually loves them quite dearly, but Emberstar has the keen and discomforting ability to place everything in an objective light and calculate, juggling lives, territory, and the overall good of the Clan and the forest in brief flashes, putting kits, his mother, and his worst enemy in the same group to judge, though understanding the way of other cats, too, and knowing that they do not do the same. Those, too, enter his ruthless mind.
Perhaps much to a witness's surprise, Emberstar can be very warm and kind to cats he wants to be and can show a surprising amount of compassion for someone so harsh and objective. It does sometimes trouble him to enact his plots and to put the truths of his mind into reality because he does have feelings, however much he tries to bury them, and he does care. He is passionate about ThunderClan and about power and about helping and doing what is best. Genuine at his core, Emberstar still employs manipulation, lies, and tangled half-truths to gain what he desires, which often end up being what he feels the Clan both needs and deserves. Rather than being bigoted against all other Clans as a matter of nature, Emberstar views them with a strategic lens, placing them in certain categories and groups, boxes if you will, for later use and understands that ThunderClan could not exist without them, though sometimes it occurs to Emberstar that perhaps a unified Clan might be better for him. It is one of his manner inner arguments, along with if his personal ambitions and drives are really best for the Clan, if he is the correct choice for anything and everything.
Surprisingly thoughtful, sharply keen, meticulously observant, obviously clever, skillfully manipulative, wildly ambitious, annoyingly patient, and intimidatingly distant are all phrases that describe Emberstar, an oddity for such a young leader.
History: Emberice, born Emberkit to his mother, Blackflower, along with his brother and sisters, Shadowkit, Frostkit, and Sleetkit -- respectively -- while his father, Frostwind, watched on proudly, puffing out his thick black fur. They were known as something of a perfect family, happy and well-respected and pleasant and strong and loyal and all that sort of thing. Blackflower was known as proud, fiercely loyal, and diligent regarding all of her duties. Frostwind was a very strong warrior, infamous in ShadowClan as a bane of their border patrols. While he was very powerful, he also was aggressive and had a special dislike for ShadowClan. As he grew, Emberkit had the best relationship with his brother, though all the kits were good friends and were willing to share secrets and go on adventures with each other. None was really dominant, and all shared in the fun, and the trouble, that ensued from their adventures and roams, most of which just entailed rushing over to pester their grandparents about something or annoying the medicine cat. Already, though, they were showing signs of their evolving personalities, and each had a very important purpose in the group: Shadowkit was the strong one, Emberkit the clever one, Frostkit the cheerful one who also happened to remember everything, and Sleetkit the sneaky one. Eventually, they all grew into the other roles as well, but those were their primary ones.
Once they became apprentices, they all sobered up slightly, but some kept up with their mischief. Shadowpaw especially got into trouble, and if somebody asked where to find him, anyone would role his or her eyes and point to the elders' den where he no doubt would be cleaning or being politely attentive. Shadowpaw also, however, was a charming roguish sort and grew to be quite handsome. All the while, both Blackflower and Frostwind were attentive to their offspring and took special interest in them and in their growth, though few other parents ever seemed to do that with their kits unless a parent happened to be a leader and it was for the good of the Clan's reputation. Emberpaw had a mentor that he did not particularly like, an old and lazy tom named Yarrowheart who obviously had had a few too many apprentices in his time, especially the stupid kind that ended up dead by a monster or drowning or something else equally avoidable.
When Emberpaw was about ten moons old, and hoping for a possible early warrior name -- though he knew deep down that it would never happen -- a tragedy struck, and his mentor was killed by a vicious monster when he and Emberpaw were out on a hunting lesson together (with Emberpaw doing most of the work). As far as Emberpaw knew, it was an accident, and Yarrowheart had been chasing something, some prey, and was crossing the Thunderpath when he was hit. Emberpaw was found by his mother, who looked at him sadly. Together, they walked back to camp and delivered the news. An odd expression and posture overcame Frostwind, and he stalked out as soon as the Clan meeting concluded. Puzzled, Emberpaw and his siblings crowded around their mother, eyes wide because of everything that had happened.
Blackflower took her kits to the middle of the forest so that they were alone, and she spoke to them and told them the truth: Frostwind was not their father. He believed he was, and he might have been the father of at least one of the kits, but Blackflower was convinced that at least Emberpaw and Shadowpaw were the kits of another cat, a ShadowClan tom, with whom Blackflower had had a relationship. Mistaking their relationship for something violent and against Blackflower's wishes, Frostwind had gone out of his way to kill the other tom, a warrior named Shadecloud, in the next border patrol slash raid. Blackflower said that Emberpaw reminded her of him somehow and Shadowpaw acted just like him, but that the she-cats of the litter reminded her more of Frostwind. Outraged, Shadowpaw boldly declared to his family, "I would rather die a rogue than be named a warrior in the Clan that praises my true father's murderer!" With his mother's and siblings' secret blessings, Shadowpaw fled to ShadowClan with a good word put in for him by a friend of Shadecloud who knew the truth. Emberice never did find out what story was made up for his brother, though they still spoke to each other.
After that, Emberpaw became more independent and was assigned Shadowpaw's former mentor for the remainder of his apprenticeship. Frostwind obviously did not know the truth of his sons' possible paternal legacy, but it did not actually matter to Emberpaw. He had never known this "Shadecloud", so he did not actually care; Frostwind had acted as his father, and Emberpaw had been growing away from him anyway. A couple of moons later, when the three siblings heard news that they would be named warriors soon, there was much discussion among them about what their names would be. One such day, a rainy day when they were on a walk near WindClan's border, they ran into a small band of rogues and ended up in a fight. At the end of it, Frostpaw was badly wounded, and the medicine cat said he could do nothing to heal her. Angry at his loss, angry in part at StarClan and in part at nothing in particular, Emberpaw found solace in his solitude, but also comfort in his sister's presence. They had lost two siblings together, but remained fast friends. Just before the warrior ceremony, Emberpaw let it slip that he did not want the suffix "frost", though he had heard that that was what it was going to be.
At the warrior ceremony, Emberpaw mostly was angry and disappointed in everything, but also promised himself to make everything better. He looked at the leader on that giant slab of stone and promised himself that one day he would wield the same sort of power, the life-or-death with a word power that all leaders possessed. As he touched his nose to the leader's shoulder, hearing the name "Emberice" called out, he thought of his brother and where he was, and also felt a wave of relief. Not named after his not-father. His two traits were "intelligence" and "patience", both apt descriptions.
After the warrior ceremony, at his first Gathering as a warrior, Emberice did not get a chance to see his brother, and he remained with his sister the entire time. They met several times on the border, though, and exchanged words and jokes before their Clanmates arrived. They only met at a Gathering when they were seventeen moons old, and spent a great deal of time together with each other and their sister. Both of his parents are alive still.
-----------------
Although Emberice is still a young warrior, he was recently granted an apprentice to mentor and teach about a moon ago. Although there has been some grumbling about this, some suspect that his parents weaseled their way into the minds of the deputy and the leader and tossed some political weight around to get this to happen. Personally, Emberice did not really care, and cats did not treat him especially differently, but he was pleased with having an apprentice, which was one step on the path to being a leader.
About a moon after Emberice got his apprentice, the deputy died very suddenly and surprisingly in a confused fight with an unusually large group of rogues (while on a patrol with a couple of other cats, including some friends of Frostwind). Immediately upon hearing the news, the leader called a Clan meeting and announced that Emberice would be deputy. Shocked, the young warrior was confused by all of this new change -- surely his father or mother would have been a better choice? But apparently not, apparently he was the right one for the job. The leading cause of death in the Clans, though, or at least in ThunderClan, always seemed to be "being deputy", though (much the same as a parent in a Disney cartoon -- not that Emberice knows of those, of course). His sister soon was granted an apprentice afterwards, and Emberice couldn't help but wonder if they were preparing for the possibility of his death, too. It was not from the wind, then, that Emberice had such a keen and objective way of looking at the world, especially Clan politics.
-----------------
However, Ferretstar, ThunderClan's young and energetic leader, died of a mysterious illness that seemed to sweep through all nine lives almost at once. All the cats were shocked and were on the verge of panicking when Emberice went to gain his nine lives at his staggeringly young age; at eighteen moons, cats are barely warriors. Even so, he gained his new name and lives and was acknowledged as a proper leader, and so, Emberstar, now leader, has received his nine lives and has successfully led his Clan in their home by the lake, carefully avoiding war and conflict. But he is planning something, something very big.
